What is a WHOIS lookup?
WHOIS is the public registry protocol for domain names and IP address allocations. For a domain, this tool shows whether it is registered or available, the registrar, creation, update, and expiry dates, name servers, and status codes. For an IP address, it shows the regional registry, the netblock the address belongs to, the owning organization, country, and the abuse contact.
The raw registry response is included as well, so you can see exactly what the authoritative server returned when the parsed summary is not enough.
How to use
- Enter a domain name (example.com) or an IP address (203.0.113.10).
- Run the lookup and read the parsed summary — registration dates, registrar, and name servers for domains; netblock and organization for IPs.
- Check the status codes on a domain (for example clientTransferProhibited) to understand its lock state.
- Expand the raw response when you need the full registry record.
Frequently asked questions
What do domain status codes like clientTransferProhibited mean?
Status codes are EPP flags set by the registrar or registry. clientTransferProhibited blocks transfers to another registrar, clientHold removes the domain from DNS, and serverUpdateProhibited locks the record at the registry level. Most are protective locks, not problems.
Why is registrant contact information missing?
Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal data from public WHOIS output. You will typically see the registrar and dates but not the owner's name or email; abuse contacts remain published.
Can I look up who owns an IP address?
You can see which organization an address block is allocated to and which regional registry (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, or AFRINIC) manages it, plus an abuse contact — but not individual subscriber information.
